Teach Someone To Abide

Become a Bridge Builder

This is a picture of a rustic bridge.

One of the greatest oppurtunites we have to accomplish our missions to “Make Disciple of Jesus” is to pass on what we have learned along the way in journey with Jesus!

Take a moment to read through the poem “The Bridge Builder”

By Will Allen Dromgoole

An old man going a lone highway,
Came, at the evening cold and gray,
To a chasm vast and deep and wide.
Through which was flowing a sullen tide
The old man crossed in the twilight dim,
The sullen stream had no fear for him;
But he turned when safe on the other side
And built a bridge to span the tide.

“Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near,
“You are wasting your strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day,
You never again will pass this way;
You’ve crossed the chasm, deep and wide,
Why build this bridge at evening tide?”

The builder lifted his old gray head;
“Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said,
“There followed after me to-day
A youth whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm that has been as naught to me
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be;
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!”

There are Many Christians Who are Younger in Their Faith Who Would Love to Learn:

How can I pray effectively?

How can I get something out of the Bible when I read it?

How can I experience more of God’s power and presence in my life?

Steps:

  1. Prayerfully consider the Explorers, New Disciples and Growing Disciples God has placed in your life.
  2. Ask God to reveal to you a person or persons that you can begin to intentionally invest in.
  3. Invite the person or persons to join you for a period of time to discuss the practice of Abide. A great option is to invite them to a meal or to join you for coffee.

During your time together discuss questions like:

  1. How have I learned to pray more effectively?
  2. How have I learned to get more out of the Bible when I read it?
  3. How have I learned to experience more of God’s power and presence in my life?
  4. How do I hear God’s voice in my life?
  5. What activities keep me growing in my faith?
  6. What has helped me to overcome struggles, temptations and sin patterns in my life?

Share from your own experience how you have been able to grow in these specific aspects of abiding with God.
